Women’s Symphony League of Austin

Founded in 1953, the Women’s Symphony League of Austin provides service and financial support to the Austin Symphony Orchestra and its children’s educational programs. With a diverse membership of more than 650, this group gives over 10,000 hours of service annually and raised over $380,000 for the ASO last year alone.

Among the many educational /service projects on which members work are:

Children’s Day Art Park

On Wednesday mornings during June and July, volunteers help with tickets, balloons, refreshments and art activities at Symphony Square in downtown Austin.

Orchestra Relations

Volunteers help with food for the symphony players at the dress rehearsals on the Thursday evening prior to the weekend concerts throughout the season.

Pops Decorations

Members of this committee decorate the tables for at least one of the two Pops Concerts held at the Palmer Events Center each season (December or June).

Symphony for Simple Simon/Sinfonica de Simon

WSL’s award-winning project that introduces grade schoolers to the music and instruments of the orchestra. Two groups (one performing in English, one in Spanish) have rehearsals and perform at area schools.

Teacher Appreciation

Committee members help with food and other aspects at an after school event that honors area school music teachers each Spring.

Youth Concerts

This committee helps with ushering /general assistance, either decorating for the Halloween Children’s Concert or by ushering and assisting at the Young People’s Concerts in the Spring.

Youth Leadership Council

The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is a fun and rewarding way to support the Austin Symphony youth education programs. Membership is open to high school students in grades 10,11 and 12. Click here for more details.

Candidates for membership in the WSL are recommended by current members. Active members are requested to participate both financially and with volunteer hours each year on two major fundraisers: Jewel Ball in the fall and Children’s Valentine Party and Style Show or the Youth Leadership Council. They also participate on at least one other service or educational committee.

General Meetings, which include a program and social time as well as a short business session, are usually held on the second Monday of each month, September through May. Half of the meetings are held during the lunch hour and half in the evening. Attendance at General Meetings is not required.
