Press Releases FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
WHO: The Austin Symphony Orchestra
DATE: January 23, 2007
CONTACT: Don Hill, Director of Public Relations - 476-6064 x 213
On February 1st, students of the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) will have a rare opportunity to be “up close and personal” with one of the world’s preeminent musicians when Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie stops by for a special visit to meet with and perform for them. Ms. Glennie will be in Austin to perform with the Austin Symphony Orchestra on February 2 & 3 as the ASO closes its 96th classical concert season. Diana Poeppelmeyer of TSD says that this is an extraordinary event for these students to meet with a musician of Ms. Glennie’s international stature. This is a particularly special appearance due to the fact that Ms. Glennie, herself, has been profoundly deaf since age 12. Ms. Glennie will perform for the students, talk about her career as a deaf musician and discuss with them the different ways she performs her craft.
Evelyn Glennie is the first person in musical history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist. As one of the most eclectic and innovative musicians on the scene today, she is constantly redefining the goals and expectations of percussion.
Much media attention has been given to the fact that Glennie is a deaf musician. Even though Evelyn is profoundly deaf, she doesn’t feel the need to make a big deal about it. After she lost her hearing, she spent a lot of time redefining her ability to detect vibration. She can distinguish the rough pitch of notes by associating where on her body she feels the sound. By playing barefoot, Evelyn is able to experience the music fully. Her attacks contain a controlled ferocity or an astounding delicacy; her ultra-speed and accuracy can barely be described.
According to Diana Eblen, Director of Education for the ASO, students of the Texas School for the Deaf will also be joined by students from Austin High, Bedichek Middle School, Crockett High School, McNeil Deaf ED and Round Rock ISD.
Evelyn Glennie’s appearance is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Sam A. Wilson and the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation.
