Maestro Peter Bay and the ASO continue to celebrate their 99th season with performances of works by Mendelssohn and Bruckner on October 9 & 10. These performances mark the return to the Austin stage of violinist Chee-Yun after a 15-year absence. These concerts are proudly sponsored by Lancer Resources and UBS Financial Services.
Program
Mendelssohn – Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64
Bruckner – Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major “Romantic”
Since her first public performance at age 8 in Seoul, South Korea, violinist Chee-Yun has enraptured audiences on five continents with her flawless technique, dazzling tone and compelling artistry. For the past two decades, she has performed regularly with the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors. Charming, charismatic and deeply passionate about her art, Chee-Yun continues to carve a unique place for herself in the ever-evolving world of classical music, embracing an active performance and recording schedule of orchestral and chamber music, as well as holding an Artist-in-Residence and Violin Professorship at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She now brings her amazing talent back to the Austin Symphony stage. She joins Maestro Bay and the musicians of the ASO in performances of Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor.
After a brief intermission, Maestro Bay returns to the stage to lead the Austin Symphony in a reading of Anton Bruckner’s “Romantic” Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major. Written in 1874, the composer revised it substantially in 1877-78. While the thematic substance of the first two movements remained identical, there are great differences in their details. The Scherzo and Trio movements were discarded, totally replaced and the Finale substantially rewritten.
Tickets for Chee-Yun with the Austin Symphony range from $19 to $48. Student rush tickets are also available 20 minutes prior to performance for $5 cash and current student ID.
