Rimsky-Korsakov – Scheherazade

Designed by the Chicago Symphony for both classical music aficionados and newcomers to look deeper into the world of classical music, “Beyond the Score” has become a series of multimedia concerts that have delighted audiences since their introduction in 2009. The Austin Symphony brings this educational and entertaining look at Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous work following the success of Beyond the Score: Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony in January 2011 and Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” in November of 2012.

The first half of the concert offers a multimedia examination of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, utilizing actors Charles Ney as Rimsky-Korsakov, Rujuta Narweker as Scheherazade, and projected images, revealing its context in history, how it fits into the composer’s output of works, the details of Rimsky-Korsakov’s life that influenced its creation. This presentation shares the illuminating stories found “inside” the music. After intermission, concertgoers return to the hall with newly discovered knowledge to hear a complete, uninterrupted performance of the Scheherazade played in its entirety.
