Program

Mahler – Symphony No. 2 in C Minor “Resurrection”

Created over a period of six years, Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony is a sprawling, monumental work utilizing not only a huge symphony orchestra, but soloists and chorus, as well. It has been said that few pieces of music are capable of affecting the listener as this symphony does. It is about doubt and belief, about hope and despair—a musical journey through the inner world of Mahler and of all of us. The composer’s own reaction upon hearing the symphony: “The whole thing sounds as though it comes to us from some other world. And I think there is no way to escape its power.”

Concertgoers can enjoy “Concert Conversations” with Bob Buckalew at 7:10 p.m. in the concert hall. These free discussions provide an in-depth look at the composers and works being performed, including commentary on the social climate in which they were composed.
