Community Concerts

Christmas In the Community

“Christmas in the Community” is a free community-wide event where brass, string, and woodwind ensembles of the Austin Symphony will canvass the Greater Austin area during the month of December. It is our mission to bring the sounds of the holidays to the community instead of the community coming to us.

By taking the orchestra out of the concert hall and into public spaces, we reach thousands of people and get to introduce ourselves to new audiences.

In addition to the professional musicians of the Austin Symphony, we will also invite select student members of the Austin Youth Orchestra to perform in these ensemble concerts, as an educational component. These students will be part of the various ensembles playing across Austin, performing side-by-side with professional Austin Symphony musicians, gaining invaluable experience along the way

Each Sunday a different ensemble of the Austin Symphony will be featured at the new Hartman Park, located on the grounds of the Long Center for the Performing Arts, performing music from jazz and light classical to pops selections and film scores. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket and make it a group outing Sorry, no alcohol is allowed at these events.

The music and atmosphere will reflect a simpler time when performances of familiar classics in downtown gathering places were commonplace. It is the hope of the Hartman family that these free and very informal outdoor events will provide an opportunity for Austinites to become acquainted or reacquainted with the classical music experience. These enchanting outdoor park concerts, which last one hour, are an ideal opportunity for Austinites to enjoy some of the Capitol City’s greatest pleasures — the fine music presented by the Austin Symphony and the magnificent cityscape views of downtown Austin.
