2nd Annual Young Composers Competition
The Austin Symphony invites young Texas composers, ages 18 & younger, to participate in the ASO’s 2nd Annual Young Composers Competition. Interested students may submit one full original (not an arrangement) orchestral composition between 5 and 7 minutes in length. Works should use standard orchestral instrumentation and normal doublings: Flutes (Piccolo), Oboes (English Horn), Clarinets (Bass Clarinet), Bassoons (Contra), Horns, Trumpets, Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion, Harp, Piano and Strings. Works requiring electronics or special effects should not be submitted. Works may not have been previously performed, recorded or published professionally. Works not adhering to these guidelines will be disqualified.
The winning composition will be played at a series of concerts performed at local Austin area high schools by the Austin Symphony Orchestra in January 2012. Should the winning composer reside outside of the Austin area, he/she and parent(s) will be offered transportation and hotel accommodations to Austin to attend rehearsals and performances of the work. In addition, an archival recording will be made for the composer’s personal use.
Materials to be Submitted
1. Submit one score, labeled with your name and title of work; include duration of the work and year written, and a short program note.
2. Recording (optional, but recommended). Emailed recordiings must be in MP3 format or sent as a CD recording via regular mail.
3. Short biography and personal photo of the composer. Include name, address, phone number and email.
4. Self Addresses Stamped Envelope, if you submit materials via regular mail and would like your work and recording returned. Materials submitted without an SASE will be either kept in our files or discarded.

Works sent via email are to be sent as FINALE files and MP3s (for sound file). A free version of FINALE NOTEPAD is available for download on the internet. Enclose all files in a single folder entitled ASO Young Composers Competition 2011-{insert your name}. The email subject line should be titled exactly like the folder.

The winning composer must attend rehearsals scheduled for mid-January at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, TX. Transportation and accommodations shall be provided for out-of-town winner by the Austin Symphony. The winning composer must provide proof of age and residency in the State of Texas.
The Austin Symphony Orchestra reserves the right to declare that a winner does not exist if the entry requirements and the musical standards are not fulfilled.
